RAG was granted Charity status as a CIO on 11th October, 2017. Rosliston Astronomy Group (RAG) has been in existence since October 1999. Throughout this time the Group has had a major focus on Outreach, working with various community groups - scouts/guides, schools, parents and children, the elderly, disability groups, and a number of adult local groups. RAG presents these events independently, and in partnership with the Rosliston Forestry Centre Environmental Education Team at all their Science Days, and ‘Nightworld’ events through the year. We have an average of 70 Adult members and we also have an enthusiastic Junior Members section. In addition, the society is committed to 'lifelong learning' not just for the general public, but also for our Members. We have a number of Special Interest Groups, and we are about to embark on providing our Adult Members with the opportunity to gain their GCSE in Astronomy. We also support our junior individuals gaining the various elements relating to Astronomy within the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme. The focus of The Peter Bolas Observatory is twofold - to further the study of astronomy for our Members, and to improve our Outreach provision for the various Community Groups. It provides a base from which we can introduce a ‘bank’ of teaching telescopes to facilitate ‘hands on’ experiences for all community groups. Within our overall programme we include practical experience for young people drawn from disadvantaged backgrounds in the local area, to encourage improved engagement in STEM subjects.
